Sigiriya: The Majestic Lion Rock Fortress

Sigiriya, also known as the Lion Rock Fortress, is a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Northern Matale District, approximately 180 km from Colombo. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1982, Sigiriya stands as a stunning example of 5th-century urban planning, seamlessly blending landscaping, hydraulic management, engineering, architecture, painting, sculpture, and poetry.

The monolithic rock formation is believed to have originated from volcanic activity during the pre-Cambrian era. Before its transformation into a fortress, Sigiriya served as a serene monastery complex. Its political significance emerged in the 5th century AD when King Kashyapa constructed the impressive fortress and palace atop the rock, along with the surrounding gardens.
