Adam’s Peak

The Peak Wilderness, home to the iconic Adam’s Peak, is a stunning tropical rainforest in Sri Lanka, rich in biodiversity and natural beauty. Historically, significant portions of this lush forest were cleared during the British period for tea plantations, yet the area remains a vital habitat for numerous species. It is nourished by the Kalu and Kelani Rivers, along with a multitude of cascading waterfalls that enhance its scenic charm.

Rising to 2,243 meters, Adam’s Peak is a site of deep spiritual significance. According to the ancient chronicle Mahavamsa, the Buddha visited Sri Pada after his journey to Kelani, leaving behind a remarkable footprint measuring 1.8 meters long. The peak attracts pilgrims from all walks of life, with the pilgrimage season running from December to May. Many climbers set off in the early hours, around 1 AM, to witness the breathtaking sunrise from the summit, a truly unforgettable experience.

However, during the off-season, the challenging weather conditions—heavy rain, thick mist, and strong winds—make the ascent difficult. Additionally, the surrounding area is known for its gem-bearing regions, adding to the allure of this natural wonder.
