Located just 190 kilometers from Colombo and 10 kilometers from the popular tourist hotspot of Habarana, Minneriya National Park is renowned for its spectacular elephant gatherings, where up to 250-300 elephants can be seen converging around the catchment area of the Minneriya tank.

The tank itself, built by King Mahasen in the 4th century AD, plays a crucial role in this phenomenon. As the water levels recede, the elephants flock to the lush grasses that sprout in the catchment area, creating a breathtaking scene that draws wildlife enthusiasts from around the globe. During the high water season, many of these magnificent creatures migrate to the nearby Kaudulla National Park, another wildlife haven.

In addition to its iconic elephants, Minneriya is home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including the elusive Sri Lankan leopard. The park boasts a total of 24 species of mammals, 170 species of birds, and 25 species of reptiles, making it a vibrant ecosystem full of life and adventure.

Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher, a wildlife photographer, or simply seeking a unique safari experience, Minneriya National Park offers unforgettable encounters with some of Sri Lanka’s most majestic creatures amidst stunning natural beauty.
