Kandy is the Second Largest City in Srilanka which Declared as a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. The city located 133km away from Capital Colombo and 1500ft above from the sea level.
The last capital of Sinhala Kings, Kandy is remarkable for the natural beauty of its setting in a peaceful natural surrounding with an artificial lake. Sinhala Kanda became Kandiya and later Kandy. The palace buildings, shrines and the British period buildings give it a special character.
The Present history of Kandy dates back to the 15th Century. The Natha Devala , which was built by a Gampola king is supposed to be the oldest building in the site. King Wimaladarmasuriya made it a capital of the country by 1592AD. Since then it continued as the capital until the capture of the last king and the country became a British colony in 1815. Kandy has played an important role in the political and cultural history of Srilanka.
